Most Americans (and the press) seem completely oblivious to the dangers of the bird flu epidemic in Asia. It has the potential of being worse than the bubonic plague of the Middle Ages or the World War I flu epidemic. I have heard that up to 50% of the people who come down with it will die--the world has seen nothing like this in modern times.
