While many countries condemned the NSA spying, many were cooperating with it to gather information on people.
Snowden’s recently quoted remarks on the NSA—“They are in bed with the Germans just like with most other Western states,” he told Der Spiegel—has brutally undermined Chancellor Merkel’s posturing. But far more devastating, I think, is this from Snowden: If the NSA is ordered to target an individual, it sucks up every bit of his data, he said, “So the target’s computer no longer belongs to him. It more or less belongs to the US government.”
